With its lovely layers of white and light, open feel, it's hard to take your eyes off this beautiful bathroom sanctuary. Linda Mazur, the talent behind the design, takes us through the renovation process in an exclusive Q&A with Beautiful Design Made Simple.
My client had a bathroom space that hadn’t been renovated in approximately 20 years. The space was not functional with it’s large step-up corner tub and tiny enclosed shower. They really desired an open airy look that was elegant and provided good storage.
Storage space was our biggest challenge. Though the bathroom is a comfortable size it was quite broken up, and with my client’s need for an abundant amount of storage space we were challenged to create something that was elegant in appearance but utilitarian for storage. The space had an alcove area where we wanted to situate the vanity. We used the extra depth this alcove provided to create an extra deep custom vanity for our client, with accessible roll-out shelves and drawers.
The day-to-day lifestyle of my clients is most important when designing a bathroom space. Is the space for family living or more of a “spa-like” retreat. We also need to consider budgets, “wish-lists” and even things like the age and health restrictions of our clients. Many people are choosing to “age-in-place” and when designing for such, there are several different criteria that needs to be addressed.
Flooring is an important part of any bathroom design. With the abundant selection of flooring options available to us the possibilities are only limited by creativity. I like to incorporate several different types of tiles, in varying scales and patterns to create an interesting upscale look to the bathroom space. Depending on the bathroom space I’m designing, I have also combined wood and tile for an interesting look.
The over-sized vanity is equipped with roll-out shelves for easy accessibility to the back of the vanity, and longer length drawers for added storage space. We also designed a curb-less walk-in shower which creates a great seamless look to the space and allows for easy access to the shower.
My client desired a very light and airy space. We selected a simple palette that varied the colors from off-white to shades of grey, creams and taupe to create a timeless approach to this bathroom that can easily be accented with many trending colors.
One of my favorite aspects is the simple combination of pattern and texture we achieved in a relatively monochromatic space. The variety of tiles used, with the addition of the wallpaper creates for me a simple understated elegance.
My clients were thrilled with the outcome of this renovation. The calmness achieved with a simple tone-on-tone approach is exactly what they were looking for. That combined with meeting there storage needs and finally having an easily accessible bathtub accompanied with a large shower was just perfect.
