Caring for Your Floors
Your floors are one of the biggest investments in your home — and a little routine care goes a long way toward keeping them looking beautiful for decades. Below you’ll find simple, manufacturer-recommended care and maintenance guidance for every floor type we carry. Follow these tips to protect your warranty, extend the life of your floors, and keep every room looking its best.
Carpet Care
Vacuum high-traffic areas two to three times a week and the whole home weekly — regular vacuuming is the single most important thing you can do for carpet longevity. Use walk-off mats at entrances, and treat spills immediately by blotting (never rubbing) with a clean white cloth. Schedule professional hot-water extraction cleaning every 12–18 months to remove embedded soil and keep most manufacturer warranties valid. Hardwood Care
Sweep or dust-mop daily in busy areas and use a hardwood-specific cleaner recommended by your floor’s manufacturer — never wet-mop or steam-clean hardwood, as moisture is its biggest enemy. Add felt pads under furniture legs, keep pet nails trimmed, and maintain indoor humidity between 35–55% to prevent gapping and cupping. With proper care, most hardwood floors can be screened or refinished to look brand new for generations.
Luxury Vinyl Care
Luxury vinyl is one of the easiest floors to maintain: sweep or vacuum (without a beater bar) regularly, and damp-mop with a pH-neutral cleaner as needed. Avoid wax, polish, and abrasive scrubbers — they can dull or damage the wear layer. Use non-rubber-backed mats at entries and felt pads under furniture to prevent scuffs and indentations.
Laminate Care
Dry-sweep or vacuum with a hard-floor attachment, and clean with a lightly damp (never wet) mop using a laminate-approved cleaner. Skip steam cleaners, polish, and wax entirely — excess moisture and coatings can damage laminate’s protective surface. Wipe up spills promptly, use protective pads under furniture, and place mats at exterior doors to catch grit before it scratches.
